On Saturday evening (13 July), attentive witnesses followed a road user who had previously caused an accident at the Lübbecker Straße / Vilsendorfer Straße junction and continued driving straight away. At around 6.37 pm, a 19-year-old woman from Enger was driving along Vilsendorfer Straße in the direction of Lübbecker Straße. The young Peugeot driver intended to turn left onto Lübbecker Straße in the direction of Enger when the traffic lights turned green. She waited at the stop line to allow oncoming traffic to pass first. Suddenly, the driver of a white Opel Vivaro came from the left and hit the front of the Peugeot. According to initial investigations, the Opel driver drove into the intersection despite the red light. But instead of attending to the accident, the driver continued his journey in the direction of Bielefeld. Witnesses to the accident followed the fleeing Opel driver into a residential area, where they were able to speak to the driver and draw his attention to the accident. Surprised by the following witnesses, the 50-year-old driver from Enger only then returned to the scene of the accident. Due to contradictory statements by the 50-year-old and the witness statements, it was suspected that the Opel driver was under the influence of alcohol. A voluntary alco-test was clearly positive. A blood sample was taken from him. Both vehicles were damaged, but remained roadworthy. The material damage is estimated at around EUR 8,000.
